What we mean by designer
Designer, signed and pre-owned, defined plainly
Designer
A piece made by a named jewelry house, listed under that house only once the signature, the metal standard and the construction agree with one another.
Signed
A piece carrying a maker's mark: a house name, a workshop punch or a registered maker's mark. Signed does not always mean famous, and a signature is evidence rather than proof.
Pre-owned designer
Signed work that is too recent to be vintage or antique. We call it estate or pre-owned designer and never call it vintage unless the piece genuinely is.
Authentication
How a signature is checked here
We verify signatures and hallmarks; every signed piece is checked by our in-house gemologist before it is listed. The mark, the serial where one exists, the metal standard and the construction all have to agree. Where they do not, the piece is described as being in the style of the house rather than by it, and we say why.
Facts on a listing come from what we examined. Where a field is unrecorded it stays empty rather than being filled in with a likely answer.

- A detailed valuation and authenticity report is prepared by our gemologist.
