Victorian jewelry covers more than sixty years, and almost nothing about a piece from 1840 resembles one from 1895. The early Romantic years gave us hand-chased gold, snake and serpent motifs and sentimental symbolism; the Grand period brought heavier gold, jet and mourning jewelry, garnets and seed pearls; the late Aesthetic years turned lighter and more delicate, with star and crescent brooches, hinged bangles and small diamond work.

Victorian jewelry (1837 to 1901) runs from restrained early gold work to sentimental mid-period lockets, snakes and mourning pieces, and finally the diamond-rich late years. Rose and yellow gold dominate.
Every piece here is checked at our own bench before it goes online: metal karat tested, marks read under magnification, stones and settings examined, and condition described as we find it. Anything we cannot verify is left as not specified rather than guessed, and we will show you any piece live on video before you buy.

Explore AtelierWhat runs through all of it is hand work. Victorian goldsmiths built pieces up from sheet and wire rather than casting them, so a genuine Victorian locket, bangle or brooch carries small irregularities you can see under a loupe. Rose-cut and old mine-cut diamonds, foil-backed stones and closed-back settings are all normal for the period, and none of them are faults.
We buy Victorian jewelry across Europe and restore it at our own bench in the Netherlands, where our family has worked since 1973. Hinges, catches, glazed locket compartments and worn shanks are serviced so the piece can be worn, and any restoration is recorded in the condition report. Where a hallmark is worn away we test the metal rather than assume the standard.
Romantic (roughly 1837–1860): sentimental motifs, hand-chased gold, hair and mourning work. Grand (1860–1885): larger, heavier, jet, onyx, garnets, archaeological revival. Aesthetic (1885–1901): lighter and smaller, star and crescent brooches, bar brooches, early diamond line work.
Victorian jewelry was made to be personal. Lockets held photographs and hair, gemstones were chosen so their initials spelled words, and mourning pieces recorded a name and a date. We open every locket to check the hinges, the glazing and the compartments, and clean them without erasing what makes them what they are.
Victorian gold wears beautifully; the weak points are hinges, tube catches, pin stems and thin shanks. Our goldsmith renews an unsafe pin stem or catch as a matter of course and notes it. Jet, hair work and foil-backed stones need gentler handling, and the care notes on each listing say how.
