The old European cut is the diamond of the late Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco years, cut by hand between roughly 1890 and 1930. It is round, like a modern brilliant, but everything else about it is different: a small table, a high crown, a deep pavilion and an open culet you can see straight down through the middle of the stone. Under warm light it does not scintillate in fine points; it throws broad, soft flashes of white and colour that people describe as candlelight.

The old european cut was cut by hand, for candlelight, and is judged by life and character rather than by modern proportion grades.
Check the hallmark and the wear together: an honest antique ring shows soft, even wear on the high points, original solder lines and a shank that has not been thinned. Ask to see the culet of any old-cut stone, the back of the setting and the gallery, all of which we will show you live on video before you buy.

Explore AtelierThat behaviour is a consequence of hand cutting, not a defect. A cutter working before laser saws and computer modelling kept as much weight as possible from the rough and cut for the light people actually lived in. Two old European cuts of the same carat weight can look quite different, which is why we assess each one individually rather than quoting a specification sheet.
This hub gathers the pieces we currently own that are set with old European cuts — engagement rings above all, but also earrings, pendants and brooches. Our gemologist assesses each stone in its setting for cut character, colour, clarity and any treatment, and records what can be established. Where a stone cannot be graded reliably in the mount, we say so rather than publishing a number we cannot stand behind.
Small table relative to the diameter, a high crown, a short lower half, and an open culet that appears as a small circle when you look straight down. Facets are often slightly uneven, and the girdle may be unpolished. All of these are period characteristics.
A modern brilliant is optimized for maximum return of white light under bright, cool lighting. An old European cut returns fewer, larger flashes with more coloured fire, and looks distinctly better in candlelight and low evening light. Neither is better; they are cut for different rooms.
We describe cut character, estimated colour and clarity in the setting, and any visible treatment or damage. If a stone has been replaced or recut, that goes in the condition report. Higher-value pieces come with a valuation and authenticity report prepared by our own gemologist.
