The Art Deco years produced the engagement ring most Americans picture when they picture an antique one: platinum, geometric, millegrain along every edge, an old European cut diamond in a hand-pierced gallery, often flanked by baguettes, calibré sapphires or a step of onyx. It is architectural rather than romantic, and it reads as modern in a way that surprises people who expect antique jewelry to look fussy.

About art deco engagement rings
Art Deco (roughly 1920 to 1935) is geometry, contrast and platinum: stepped shoulders, calibré-cut colored stones, crisp millegrain and old European cut centers.
Check the hallmark and the wear together: an honest antique ring shows soft, even wear on the high points, original solder lines and a shank that has not been thinned. Ask to see the culet of any old-cut stone, the back of the setting and the gallery, all of which we will show you live on video before you buy.

Explore AtelierIt is also the most copied. A great deal of what is sold as Deco was made in the last thirty years, cast rather than hand-pierced, and set with modern brilliants. Our listings separate the two without hedging: a ring appears in this collection only when the construction, hallmarks and stone cuts support a genuine 1920s or 1930s date. Later rings made in the taste of the period are described as exactly that.
Each ring is examined at our bench before it is listed. The platinum is tested, the gallery and millegrain checked for earlier repair, the claws checked for replacement, and the diamonds assessed under magnification by our gemologist, a GIA Graduate Gemologist (GG). Rings are shown in US sizes, resizing is free where the ring allows it, and everything ships free and insured to the US with import duties included.
Platinum or white gold, hand-piercing you can see from the side, millegrain beading, a geometric outline, and period stone cuts — old European, transitional, single-cut accents, calibré-cut coloured stones. Modern brilliants in an otherwise period mount usually mean later re-stoning, and we say so.
Old European cut centres dominate, often with baguette or triangular shoulders and calibré sapphire, emerald or onyx accents. Coloured stones of the period are frequently synthetic by design, which was normal and not deceptive; our gemologist, a GIA Graduate Gemologist (GG), identifies them and the listing records it.
Platinum wears extremely well, but claws thin and millegrain softens with a century of wear. We record what our goldsmith found and what he renewed, and we tell you which rings we would put on a hand every day and which are better kept for occasions.
