Three-Stone Engagement Rings

A three-stone ring — a trilogy, in European usage — puts a larger centre between two smaller stones, and it has been made continuously since the Victorian period for the simplest of reasons: it wears wide on the finger, it reads as generous without a single enormous stone, and the proportions are forgiving on almost every hand.

About three-stone engagement rings

What defines it

Three-stone rings carry meaning as well as symmetry, and the side stones are typically matched by eye rather than by certificate.

What to look for

Check the hallmark and the wear together: an honest antique ring shows soft, even wear on the high points, original solder lines and a shank that has not been thinned. Ask to see the culet of any old-cut stone, the back of the setting and the gallery, all of which we will show you live on video before you buy.

What it costs

Most antique and vintage engagement rings we sell sit between roughly $1,500 and $12,000, with signed pieces and larger old-cut centers running higher.

Indicative only. Every curated vintage, antique and estate piece is one of a kind and priced on its own merits, with free insured US shipping.

The variations matter more than the name. A Victorian trilogy might set a diamond between two natural sapphires in yellow gold; an Edwardian one might run three graduated old European cuts in platinum; a Deco example might flank the centre with baguettes or calibré stones; a mid-century ring might use a cushion between two tapered baguettes. Each looks completely different on the hand, and each is priced by its own stones rather than by the style.

Every ring here is a single piece we own. Our gemologist assesses all three stones — including how well the side stones match each other, which is where value quietly sits in a trilogy — and our goldsmith checks the shank, the claws and any earlier repair. Sizes are shown in US sizes, resizing is free where the ring allows it, and each ring ships free and insured with import duties included.

What the three stones are said to mean

Past, present and future is the usual modern reading, and it is a nice thought rather than a historical fact: Victorian trilogies were made long before the phrase was marketed. We would rather you choose one because it suits the hand than because of a slogan.

Matching, proportion and setting

In a trilogy the side stones do the work. We record how closely they match in size, colour and cut, whether they are original to the ring, and how the centre is held — claw, collet or bezel. A well-matched antique trio is scarcer than a large single stone of the same total weight.

Diamonds and coloured centres

Diamond trilogies are the classic, but sapphire, ruby and emerald centres flanked by diamonds are just as period-correct. Our gemologist identifies each stone and any treatment; where a stone is a later replacement, the condition report says so.

Frequently asked questions

Are three-stone rings good engagement rings?
They are one of the most practical antique choices: the width flatters most hands, the setting is usually lower and more robust than a tall solitaire, and you get presence without paying for one very large stone. Each ring is one of a kind, so the fit of the specific ring matters more than the style.
Can the side stones be replaced if one is lost?
Yes, and our goldsmith can source a matching period stone in most cases. We would tell you honestly before you buy if a ring already carries a replaced side stone, because it affects both the look and the value.
Can I see the piece before I buy it?
Book a private video viewing. One of our specialists takes that exact piece into daylight on camera, turns it in the hand, shows you the hallmark and the back of the setting, and answers your questions live in your own time zone.
How does shipping to the US work?
Every order ships free, fully insured and tracked from the Netherlands to any US address. Import duties and taxes are already included in the price you see, so nothing is collected on delivery. You have 30 days to return, with free insured return shipping.
