In short

Vintage necklaces divide into three value logics. A gold chain is valued mostly on weight, karat and whether the links are solid or hollow. A locket or pendant necklace is valued on its craftsmanship, materials and condition, especially whether the compartment and hinge are intact. A pearl strand is valued on the pearls themselves, natural or cultured, and on matching, luster and surface, with the clasp as a secondary factor.

Necklace is a broad word. Before anything else, work out which of the three types you have, because the questions are not the same.

Gold chains: weight, karat, construction

Weigh it, read the hallmark, and establish whether the links are solid or hollow. Those three facts get you most of the way. Hollow links look substantial and weigh very little, which is exactly the point of them.

Beyond the metal, a fine hand-made Victorian fancy link chain carries a craftsmanship premium over a machine-made modern curb of the same weight, and an original period clasp or dog-clip adds to that.

Lockets and pendants

Here material is only the start. Solid gold outranks gold-front, and a crisp engraved surface outranks a polished-soft one by a wide margin. A complete locket, with both glazed compartments, retaining rings and a firm closure, is worth clearly more than one missing parts.

Gem-set pendants follow the same logic as rings: stones, maker, era, originality.

Pearl strands

The single biggest question is natural or cultured. Natural pearls, formed without human intervention, are far scarcer and are tested by X-ray radiography at a gem laboratory rather than by eye. Any claim that a strand is natural should rest on a report.

After that: size, matching across the strand, luster, surface cleanliness and nacre thickness. Old strands are usually strung on silk that has aged, and restringing is routine maintenance rather than a defect.

Clasps, repairs and alterations

A replaced clasp on a hundred-year-old chain is normal and barely affects value. A chain that has been shortened, or one where a section has been replaced in a different color of gold, does affect it.

Look at the join points with a loupe. Mismatched solder color and links that are slightly out of pattern are the tells.

Two pieces that look identical in a photograph can sit an order of magnitude apart in value once the metal is tested, the stones are graded and the maker is confirmed. The only honest number is one attached to a specific piece that someone has actually examined.
