Vintage Boucheron
Boucheron was founded in Paris in 1858 by Frederic Boucheron and in 1893 became the first jewelry house to open on Place Vendome. Its vintage work runs from naturalistic nineteenth century pieces through Art Deco geometry to the bold gold jewelry of the 1960s and 1970s, and French pieces normally carry both a signature and French assay and maker's marks.
The house
Frederic Boucheron opened in the Palais Royal in 1858 and built the house on technical goldsmithing rather than on stones alone. The move to 26 Place Vendome in 1893 put Boucheron at the address that later became the center of French high jewelry.
The house is closely associated with the question mark necklace, a collar that fastens without a clasp, and with animal and nature motifs that recur across more than a century of its work. Art Deco Boucheron follows the French pattern of platinum, calibre cut stones and precise millegrain.
Post-war Boucheron is often heavier yellow gold, with textured surfaces and colored cabochons, which is the period most often found in European estates today.

What is the Boucheron question mark necklace?
A collar that curves around the neck and finishes in a drop without a clasp, so it can be put on with one hand. The house introduced the form in the late nineteenth century and has returned to it many times since.
Does a French assay mark prove the house made the piece?
No. The eagle's head tells you the metal is 18K gold and that the piece passed through the French system. The lozenge maker's mark identifies the workshop, and only the signature, numbers and construction together support an attribution.
