Estate Fope

Fope is an Italian goldsmith founded in Vicenza in 1929 and is known for flexible woven gold mesh, in particular the Novecento and Flex'it constructions that let a rigid looking gold bracelet stretch over the hand without a clasp. It is a modern house, so its pieces are estate or pre-owned rather than vintage.

The house

Vicenza has been an Italian gold chain making center for centuries, and Fope grew out of that industry rather than out of a Paris style high jewelry tradition.

The house's identity is technical: mesh and link constructions engineered to move. The Flex'it system, in which tiny gold springs are built into the mesh, is what most buyers are actually looking for when they ask for Fope.

Diamond accents are usually small and set into rondels, keeping the gold work as the subject.

How to recognize the work

  • Woven gold mesh that stretches and returns to shape without a clasp
  • Even, tight construction with no snagging or kinking along the band
  • Small diamond rondels used as punctuation rather than as the main event
  • 18K gold in yellow, white and rose, often combined in one piece

What the marks mean

  • A signature reading Fope, often on a small plaque or rondel
  • 750 for 18K gold
  • An Italian maker's mark in a shield with a province code and workshop number
  • A model or serial number on many pieces

Buy carefully

A stretched or repaired mesh never regains its original spring. We test the flex and describe wear honestly, because on this house condition of the mesh is most of the value.

Common questions

How does a Flex'it bracelet stay on?

Tiny gold springs inside the mesh let the band expand over the hand and contract back to size, so no clasp is needed. The spring action is what should be checked before buying.

Is Fope vintage?

No. Fope is a modern Italian goldsmith and its pieces are estate or pre-owned. We keep that distinction on every listing.

Are you an authorized dealer?

No. We are an independent estate jeweler and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by the house. We buy signed pieces from European estates, examine and photograph the signature, numbers and metal marks, and describe exactly what we can and cannot establish.
