Buccellati was founded in Milan in 1919 by Mario Buccellati and is recognized above all by its engraving. Techniques the house names rigato, telato, segrinato and ornato give its gold a textured, almost textile surface, and that hand work, rather than the signature alone, is what distinguishes genuine Buccellati.
The house
Mario Buccellati trained in Milan and opened under his own name in 1919, working in a Renaissance goldsmithing idiom at a time when most houses were moving toward Art Deco geometry.
The house became known for lace-like pierced gold, honeycomb tulle work and silver objects made to the same standard as its jewelry. Later generations of the family continued the workshop tradition, and the engraving vocabulary has stayed consistent for a century.
Because the work is defined by hand technique, condition and the quality of the engraving matter more here than in almost any other signed jewelry.

What is rigato engraving?
Fine parallel lines cut by hand into the surface of the gold, which soften reflections and give the metal a silky look. Telato adds a second direction for a linen effect and segrinato scatters the cuts.
Is Buccellati silver worth the same as its gold?
Silver hollowware and objects are collected on their own merits and can be very fine, but they are valued differently from jewelry. We price by the piece, never by the name.
